Women University Mardan’s Botany Department Conducts Fungal and Plant Collection from Swat and Azad Jammu & Kashmir
In a remarkable scientific initiative, the Department of Botany at Women University Mardan, under the leadership of Dr. Hira Bashir (Head of Department) and Dr. Naveen Dilawar, successfully conducted an extensive fungal and plant collection from the ecologically rich regions of Swat and Azad Jammu & Kashmir (AJK). The fieldwork aimed to explore and document the botanical and mycological diversity of these biodiversity hotspots, which are known for their unique and often underexplored flora and fungi.
The research team, comprising faculty members and students, collected a wide variety of plant and fungal specimens for further taxonomic, ecological, and molecular analyses. These samples will contribute to ongoing projects focused on phylogenetic assessment and biodiversity conservation, including Dr. Hira Bashir’s PCSIR-funded project on the Phylogenetic Assessment of Mushrooms of Azad Jammu & Kashmir.
This field activity provided students with valuable hands-on experience in scientific exploration, specimen collection, and ecological documentation. It also emphasized the importance of preserving Pakistan’s rich natural heritage and understanding the vital ecological roles of fungi and plants in maintaining environmental balance.
Through this expedition, the Department of Botany continues to strengthen its position as a center for excellence in research and education, promoting experiential learning and contributing to national and global efforts in biodiversity conservation and environmental sustainability.
